05/31/02 Placed LHP Dave Williams on the 15-day disabled list with a torn labrum (cartilage) in his left shoulder and recalled RHP Bronson Arroyo from Triple-A Nashville.

depending on the severity of the tear, this could be pretty serious. Paul Sirotka tore his labrum before the start of the 2001 season. He has not pitched since and is still on the 60 day DL.

It's nothing to fool with. 3-2 changeup tore his labrum and half the tendon in his should (slap lesion) two years ago and still throws like half a man. And this guy threw 5+ innings of MLB with his shoulder like this?

It was probably much more than 5 innings. The way I understood it, Williams already had the arm problem and then had a good start. I don't think he did it in just one start.

Perhaps this explains his ERA close to 10 in his previous starts?

It most certainly would explain his recent outings. I opted not to have the surgery that was scheduled for March and do exercises with a giant rubber band that makes most household tasks tolerable but then again, I'm not stressing it like these guys do. That really amazes me that Williams was pitching with a torn labrum.

Now, the question is, does Arroyo assume Williams spot in the rotation, leaving Villone in the bullpen to be Benson's shadow? Or does Villone move into the rotation with Arroyo in the pen?

Well, I think Arroyo assumes Williams' spot in the rotation. If the Pirates wanted Villone in the rotation, they would have recalled Lincoln.

Arroyo is starting tonight, so I think that answers that question. That is how it should be. Villone is horrible as a starter and has been superb out of the bullpen. I think that is the way it needs to stay.
