Thursdays game against the Devil Rays saw the five man infield.
Howe was the man behind the game's most striking moment, and Greg Vaughn was right in the middle, again, too. After Koch loaded the bases with one out in the 10th, Howe brought in sidearmer Bradford, moved first baseman Olmedo Saenz to third, shifted third baseman Eric Chavez between second and third (with shortstop Miguel Tejada playing closer to the bag), and put left fielder Adam Piatt at first.
Vaughn lined an 0-2 pitch to Chavez, who flipped underhand to Tejada for the tag on Randy Winn.
"I've tried that a few times in the past, and it hasn't worked," Howe said.
"I've never seen it work," Chavez said. "But it was pretty routine from where I was."
