Is there any way Carolina has a chance to win a game. . .or even 2?;)

Wings in 6, but not a close series. Wings win games 1, 2, 4, and 6.

Hahahaha, you guys are way too funny. You guys think the Hurricanes can actually BEAT the Wings, at least once?;) lol

Everything is possible, probable is another story. The 'Canes should be able to take a game. I wouldn't be overly surprised by two wins. However, the Wings have to be the overwhelming favorites.

Tigers#1

This are loaded, with veterans, who have won before. I can't see the 'Canes winning more than 1.

Yeah, people said Carolina would swept in 3 by New Jersey. Then Montreal was supposed to beat Carolina, and didn't. Then CuJo and the Leafs were expected to beat Carolina, and that didn't happen. Carolina has beaten the odds the whole playoffs.

I don't think Carolina will win the cup, or even force 7 games. I do think they will win 2 games though.

He's right. No one gave Carolina a chance to make it out of the first round, much less represent the East in the Finals.

Considering that the Wings did not breeze through a single round, it should be an interesting Final, to say the least.

Tigers#1
06-01-2002, 04:42 PM
But the Western Confrence, is also a LOT better than the Eastern. In many peoples opinions, the #8 seed Canucks, would of easily made it to at least the Eastern Confrence finals the way they were playing.

GiveHyzduashot
06-01-2002, 05:19 PM
I'm not comparing the two conferences. I'm saying Carolina has beaten the odds the entire time, so I don't see why they can't win two games in the finals. Carolina beating the odds has nothing to do with what conference they are in.

Besides that, the teams they beat were very good at the time Carolina played them. New Jersey was the hottest team in the East since firing their coach; Montreal upset the #1 seed; and Toronto had beaten a good Islanders team. Carolina didn't cakewalk to the finals, and that is one reason I think they will force six games. All three teams the Hurricanes beat were/are MUCH better than the Canucks.

If both teams played up to their best in each game, the Wings would sweep. Since that rarely happens, I think Carolina can win a game.

I predict the Red Wings will take out the Whalers in four. Then again, I predicted a Rams blowout in the Super Bowl, so what the hell do I know?

Game 1 is headed to OT, Hill and O'Neill have scored for the Canes while Maltby and ??? (I think Fedorov) scored for the Wings. Carolina is playing a GREAT game.

DETROIT (Reuters) - Well, so much for an easy ride to the Stanley Cup for the Detroit Red Wings.

Ron Francis scored just 58 seconds into overtime to give the Carolina Hurricanes a surprising 3-2 win over the heavily-favored Red Wings in Game One of the Stanley Cup Final Tuesday night at Joe Louis Arena.

Game Two in the best-of-seven series is Thursday night in Detroit.

Francis took a pass from Jeff O'Neill and one-timed a shot past Dominik Hasek from right in front of the net to give the Eastern Conference champions the first game of the series on the road, shocking the Wings and a sold-out crowd at the JLA.

The teams battled to a standstill after three periods, with the score tied 2-2 and the shots even at 25-25. But after killing off a late penalty in the third period that carried into overtime, the Hurricanes struck quickly in the extra period to take a 1-0 series lead.

Carolina coach Paul Maurice wasn't shocked, but he was pleased that his team has already taken home-ice advantage away from the veteran-laden Wings.

Maurice said: "We know over the course of the series we're going to have to win one game in here, no question about that. We knew we were an underdog but there was no point in making the mountain any bigger than it already is.

"We got a bunch of good players playing a committed game to each other."

The Hurricanes certainly do have that, even though they looked a little shaky in the opening period when they trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes.

POWER PLAY

Sergei Fedorov opened the scoring for the Red Wings on the power play at 15:21 of the first period.

Bret Hedican attempted to clear the puck out of the Carolina zone, but his attempt was stopped at the blueline by Steve Yzerman, who drilled a shot from the point. Arturs Irbe stopped that shot, but Fedorov picked up the rebound in the slot and beat Irbe to put the Wings ahead.

But Carolina took advantage of a five-on-three power play opportunity to tie the game early in the second period. Francis passed from behind the Wings net to Sami Kapanen, who fed Sean Hill who drilled a shot high over Hasek's shoulder at 3:30, making it 1-1.

Detroit took the lead again at 10:39 of the second period when Kirk Maltby took a pass from Darren McCarty and fired a high wrist shot past Irbe to make it 2-1.

O'Neill then tied the game at 19:10 of the second period when he took a pass from Aaron Ward and went in on a breakaway, beating Hasek with a shot that the Detroit goalie couldn't control as it slipped into the net.

NO SURPRISE

That set the stage for Francis's heroics. That his veteran leader scored the game-winner came as no surprise to Maurice.

"The bigger the game, the better Ronnie Francis plays," Maurice said. "He's always played his best game when we needed it the most. (I'm) real happy for him."

Francis was pretty happy too, as he scored just his second career playoff overtime goal.

"Certainly it feels good," Francis said. "Our focus and our attention was on Game One, and obviously for us to win it is a boost for our confidence.

"Now that's behind us. Our focus has to be ready for Game Two."

Detroit coach Scotty Bowman took the loss in stride. "I think we didn't play as well as we wanted to. That's for sure," Bowman said. "You can analyze it anyway you want, we had a chance to win it on the power play but we didn't have a lot of chances."

After Thursday's Game Two the series moves to Raleigh, North Carolina for the first time in Stanley Cup Finals history, for games Saturday and Monday night.

So the Whalers are up 1-0. Big deal. Detroit fell down 0-2 to Vancouver before sweeping the last four games. No worries.
