Starting tailback James Stewart is close to restructuring his deal with the Lions instead of possibly getting released, according to Detroit area newspapers. Stewart is scheduled to earn a base salary of $4.15 million for 2002 and he carries a hefty $5.3 million cap value. The Lions reportedly are asking Stewart to cut his 2002 base salary to $2.5 million and his 2003 base salary from $4.9 million to $3 million. "We're close," Stewart told the Detroit News. "That's about all I can say. The intention is, I'm going to be here. I'd like to be here. There's no doubt about that, or I wouldn't be here working."
