DALLAS -- Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Donnie Nelson is expected to talk next week with the Denver Nuggets about their head coach position, the Dallas Morning News is reporting.

Nelson told the newspaper he is planning to talk to Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe while both are in Chicago for a predraft camp.

According to the Morning News, Vandeweghe developed a strong relationship with Nelson when Vandeweghe was an assistant with the Mavericks from 1999-2001, and admitted Nelson "will be a great head coach someday."

Vandeweghe is looking for a replacement for Dan Issel, who was fired at mid-season.

Nelson told the newspaper it would take a tremendous offer to pull him away from Dallas, where he's an assistant for his father, Don Nelson. Donnie Nelson also said it would be "foolish not to sit down and have a discussion" about the Denver situation.
