TORONTO (Reuters) - Carlos Tosca began his reign as Toronto Blue Jays manager in style with a 6-1 debut victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the American League on Monday.
Tosca took over from Buck Martinez, who was fired earlier in the day after the team had struggled to a dismal 20-33 record, the third worst in the AL and fourth worst in all of Major League Baseball.
"The first win is always a big one to get out of the way," Tosca said. "It was exciting, obviously, but there's a long way that we'll have to go. Hopefully, it's a good starting point for us and we can build on it."
The Blue Jays were powered by outfielder Jose Cruz, who homered in the fourth and fifth innings off loser Tanyon Sturtze (0-7), the second coming with two men aboard.
Pete Walker (1-0) overcame some early jitters to record his first win since 1995, when he was with the Mets.
