SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) -- The former baseball scout who once discovered Sammy Sosa is suing the New York Mets, saying the team is trying to move him out of a stadium where he runs a baseball academy.
Hector Acevedo, who used to work as a scout for the Texas Rangers and the Philadelphia Phillies, said Mets officials had met with Dominican baseball commissioner Jose Daniel Calzada to offer an aid package to the local community if the team is given Temistocles Metz Stadium for its operations.
The Mets declined comment on the lawsuit, filed on Tuesday in a civil court in the Dominican Republic.
Acevedo runs a baseball academy for prospects at the Temistocles Metz Stadium, located in San Cristobal, 28 miles south of Santo Domingo. He has a contract to use the stadium that expires in 2002. Ballparks in the Caribbean country are administered by the Dominican baseball commissioner's office.
The Mets now run their player academy in the Quisqueya Stadium in Santo Domingo, the country's main baseball park.
