Diamondbacks select 50 players during 2002 draft

PHOENIX - The Arizona Diamondbacks today announced their final 28 selections in Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft.
In all, the Diamondbacks selected 50 players over the last two days. Yesterday, Arizona used its first round pick, 27th overall, on infielder Sergio Santos from Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, Calif.

The Diamondbacks again concentrated heavily on talent with college experience, with 26 players chosen from four-year schools and another 10 coming from the junior-college ranks. Arizona drafted 14 high-school prospects.

By position, Director of Scouting Mike Rizzo and his staff tabbed 27 pitchers, 5 catchers, 13 infielders and 5 outfielders.

Today, Arizona re-drafted a pair of players the club selected in 2001, Jake Hanen (35th round) and Matthew Raguse (49th round). Hanen played this season at Scottsdale Community College and was the Diamondbacks 46th round pick a year ago out of Phoenix, AZ, North High School. Raguse was the team's 43rd round pick a year ago.
