GAME: Cincinnati Reds (33-24) at Anaheim Angels (34-23).

TIME: Friday, 10:05 p.m. EDT.

Bob Boone and the Cincinnati Reds face the Anaheim Angels for the first time as they open an interleague series at Edison Field.

Boone, in his second year as Reds manager, played for the Angels from 1982-1988 when they were know as the California Angels. He also lives six miles from their ballpark in the offseason.

The 55-year-old Boone is guiding a Reds team that has been alone in first place in the NL Central since April 26, a span of 42 days.

Cincinnati hopes to remain there despite having just a 34-39 all-time record in interleague play since 1997.

The Reds enter after splitting their rain-shortened two-game series with St. Louis with a 3-2 win on Thursday. They have won five of their last eight.

Barry Larkin led off the Reds' first with his fourth homer but the most encouraging sign for Cincinnati was Ken Griffey Jr.'s solo shot.

Griffey was without an extra-base hit since April 7, when he hit his first homer of the season -- also a solo shot -- and later tore the tendon in his right knee during a rundown. He sat out six weeks and had a tough time upon his return, managing only four singles in 28 at-bats.

Griffey is now 5-for-31 (.161) since returning on May 24.

``Did you all think I was going to stop at 461?'' Griffey said, referring to his career total. ``It was bound to happen. He got a pitch up, not as high as he'd like.''

The Angels had their four-game winning streak snapped with a 9-8 loss in their series finale against Texas on Thursday.

Garret Anderson hit a two-run homer and finished 2-for-4. The left fielder is hitting .419 (18-for-43) over his last 11 games with four homers and nine RBIs.

STANDINGS: Reds - 1st place, NL Central. Angels - 2nd place, 2 GB, AL West.

REDS PROBABLE STARTER: Chris Reitsma (3-2, 2.65 ERA). After winning his first three decisions, Reitsma has lost two straight starts. The right-hander hasn't allowed more than two earned runs in any of those two losses, including last Friday's 7-0 home defeat to Atlanta. He faces the Angels for the first time.

ANGELS PROBABLE STARTER: Aaron Sele (5-3, 5.16 ERA). Sele began the season 0-2 in four starts, but has since won five of six decisions. The right-hander, who went 15-5 with Seattle last season, was a 5-4 winner in Minnesota on Sunday. He walked a season-high four while allowing three earned runs and three hits over seven innings. Sele, who has spent his eight-year career in the AL, has never faced the Reds.
