ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Andy Benes has decided to begin a rehab assignment next week with Triple-A Memphis, after St. Louis Cardinals general manager Walt Jocketty encouraged the right-hander to try it rather than retire.

Benes, who has not pitched since being placed on the disabled list April 16 with an arthritic right knee, declined to report last week as expected for extended spring training in Jupiter, Fla., citing swelling in the knee. Since then, he has resumed throwing and has experienced less swelling.

``I'll see what happens,'' Benes said. ``I feel like I'll go down and get people out. It's a matter of getting back in a baseball environment.''

Benes, 34, was 0-2 with a 10.80 ERA in three starts for the Cardinals before going on the disabled list.

``I'll do whatever they want me to do,'' said Benes, who will join the minor-league team in New Orleans. ``There's not a timetable for when I get in a game.''

``Andy believes he can still pitch and we're interested in finding out,'' Jocketty said.

I'm very glad he decided to stay with the team. He is a valuable guy, and knowing you have someone ready to go and pitch in the majors, when an incident (like the mass of injuries seemingly attacked) occurs.
