Matt Harrington went from draft stud to draft dud, and he has nobody to blame but himself.
Two years ago, he was considered the top high school right-hander in the country. The Rockies took him with the seventh overall pick and offered about $4 million. It wasn't enough. Harrington held out and eventually went back into the draft, where he was taken in the second round by the Padres.
Once again, he would not agree to contract terms, spurning San Diego's offer of $1.25 million. Then, as if his reputation for being hard to sign wasn't secure, he fired his agent and hired the notorious Scott Boras, whose players usually slip in the draft because of his stubborn tactics.
Back into the draft he went. This time, Harrington fell all the way to the 13th round, where he was selected by the Devil Rays with the 374th overall pick. Reportedly, he will be seeking a $2.5 million deal from Tampa Bay. Good luck, Matt.
