CHICAGO -- LeBron James, widely considered the nation's top high school basketball player as a junior and possibly the No. 1 pick in the 2003 NBA draft, was injured Saturday during a tournament basketball game on the Southside of Chicago.

James broke his left wrist in two places when he fell after going for a dunk during the Adidas Summer Classic before a packed crowd at a Chicago high school gym. An opponent stood in for a charge, had a change of heart and stepped aside as James clipped him and fell to the court in pain, WGN radio reported.

The crowd became unruly, threatening the player involved in the incident, forcing the game to be halted.

Doctors at Northwestern Hospital in Evanston, Ill., said James, who appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated earlier this year, will need 6-8 weeks to recover and should be ready for his senior season at Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary high school in Ohio in the fall.
