SEATTLE -- The Chicago Cubs traded catcher Robert Machado to the Milwaukee Brewers for minor-league outfielder Jackson Melian on Sunday.
The Cubs announced the deal after a 5-1 win at Seattle. Machado did not play in the victory.
Machado hit .276 with one homer and five RBI in 58 at-bats this season. He also threw out nine of 18 runners who tried to steal against him.
Machado, who turned 29 last Monday, has spent parts of the last seven seasons in the majors with the Cubs, Seattle, Montreal and the White Sox. He is a career .230 hitter in 361 games.
Melian, 22, was originally signed by the New York Yankees and later traded to Cincinnati. He went to big league camp with the Reds this year and claimed off waivers by Milwaukee on March 22.
Melian began the day hitting .223 with six homers, 24 RBI and 10 stolen bases for Double-A Huntsville.

It is a bad trade but I saw it coming. Baylor originally thought that a trade would be nice because it would make room for Flash, who might be activated against the Astros.

yea i know. theyve been talkin about it for weeks. I'm surprised it didnt happen sooner. This one may come back to haunt them. I thought it shouldve been Girardi to go.

no way, trading Girardi could mean trading Prior's future. He has been teaching him for some time about the hitters.

why does everyone think girardi helps the pitchers so much? I dont get it. his CERA was a full run higher than Hundley's was last year.

I don't know, in most of the games that I have seen Hundley catch the starter doesn't last past the fifth inning. Besides I think Girardi is one of those players who is better for the organization. Think of the uproar that would be caused by trading away Girardi!!!

im not sure there would be any uproar. Fans dont like him as much as they used to. Listening to the radio and visiting other cubs board, it seems like most of them realize girardi is not as good as he once was(which was never actually that good now that i think about it.)
Most of the people I talked to prefered Machado, because he had good defense and he could hit. His only bad thing was that he had trouble handling a staff, but if he can make up for it with his bat and glove, I'm ok with it!
I think it wouldve been cool to see if machado could have played 3rd or some other position. Maybe first, to back up McGriff. It just seems like he never got a chance to prove himself being platooned with 2 other catchers. I would have like to see what he woulda done had Baylor played him for a week or 2 straight. I guess we will never know.

If MAchado was doing that good why did they trade him? For all we know this guy will go down with a season ending injury and will never ever play another game and Machado will get over 40 HR's. Hey thats how I think because I'm a Met fan so I must always be negeative about trades:biggrin:

i dont see any way that melian makes it to the club anyway. so season-ending injury or not, it wont really matter much
