Train fire forces Orioles to postpone another game

BALTIMORE -- A persistent fire aboard a derailed train forced postponement of Friday night's scheduled Angels-Orioles game at Camden Yards, the third game knocked out by the accident.

No makeup date was announced.

The Orioles are also seeking makeup dates for games postponed Wednesday and Thursday against Texas.

The derailment occurred late Wednesday afternoon between games of a scheduled day-night doubleheader against the Rangers. Because the accident took place deep in a lengthy tunnel, cleanup operations have been slow and arduous.

The 60-car freight train was carrying hydrochloric acid and other hazardous chemicals.

The second game of Wednesday's doubleheader was postponed, and a split doubleheader between the Orioles and Texas on Thursday was also called off.

Joe Foss, the Orioles chief operating officer, postponed Friday's game after firefighters told him they're dealing with "a very serious situation."

Also, many roads leading to the stadium have been blocked off, and several of the parking lots were filled with firefighting equipment.

Foss said he's been communicating with the office of the baseball commissioner in an effort to find suitable makeup dates.

"It's not a simple matter," he said.

Foss estimates the Orioles will lose $1.5 million for every game that is not made up, but said his first concern is the safety of the fans.

"We want them to come here and enjoy themselves and certainly not be at any risk," he said.

Rescheduling the games takes on an added importance because this is the final season of Orioles star Cal Ripken, who has announced he will retire after this year.

"We're extremely aware that Cal is in his last year, and Baltimore fans want to see Cal play in Baltimore," Foss said.

Although Friday's game was postponed 3 1/2 hours before the scheduled 7:05 p.m. start, several members of the Orioles showed up at the stadium and practiced late in the afternoon.
