DENVER (AP) -- Denver Broncos quarterback Steve Beuerlein threw deep passes without restrictions Monday, the first day of a five-day mini-camp.

Beuerlein, who has been hampered by an injured right elbow, threw more deep passes than he has since signing with Denver as a free agent before the 2001 season.

``I had no problem with the arm and this was a good, positive step,'' Beuerlein said. ``I am pretty much without restrictions and unless I have a reason to back off, we are going into every day thinking I can roll.''

That wasn't the case when the 15-year veteran had a minor scare at a mini-camp in May. After the first day, soreness developed in the elbow that forced him onto injured reserve and into season-ending surgery last October.

``It turned out to be just some inflammation and a little irritation from working it too hard that first day of the camp,'' Beuerlein said. ``So we gave it some rest and from that day point on it was a gradual progression of just being smart and working up to the longer throws.''

The Broncos had him throw a wide range of patterns from short dumpoffs to running backs to sideline patterns, which require pinpoint accuracy, and 10 passes of 40 yards or longer. He threw all of them, including a 40-yard scoring strike to Frank Rice, without any sign of lost arm strength or pain.

``I felt so good that there is no reason to believe that I am going to have another setback,'' Beuerlein said. ``My arm feels so good that I am worried more about my footwork, timing and coordination than anything else.''
