PHOENIX -- The Phoenix Suns hired Marc Iavaroni as an assistant coach Monday.

Iavaroni worked for Miami Heat coach Pat Riley from 1999-2002, handling general on-the-floor duties as well as player development. He spent two seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers before that.

"He's a great teaching coach and will be a big key in the ongoing development of our young players," team president Bryan Colangelo said.

Iavaroni ranked among the Atlantic Coast Conference's top 10 in career scoring and rebounding when he finished at Virginia in 1978. He played for Philadelphia, San Antonio and Utah from 1982-89, earning an NBA championship with the 76ers in 1983. He then played professionally in Italy and Spain before retiring in 1991.
