The White Sox are scouting Detroit right-hander Jeff Weaver, though the Tigers' asking price may be too high for now.
Larry Monroe, the Sox's vice president of major league scouting, took in the Tigers-Phillies series in Detroit over the weekend, watching Weaver get bombed in an 11-1 loss Friday. The Sox are seeking a veteran starter, and though the Tigers are shopping Weaver, they want three players in return, including two with major-league experience.
Triple-A third baseman Joe Crede may be the key to a Weaver trade, though the Sox hope to hang on to him. A more likely option for the Sox is a package including Carlos Lee, Matt Ginter and a choice of minor-league pitchers.
Weaver is 4-8 with a 3.94 earned-run average, tied with Todd Ritchie for most losses among American League pitchers. But he's fourth in the AL in ERA on the road at 2.68, and has given up only two home runs. Weaver's four-inning outing Friday was his shortest stint over the last two seasons.
