The White Sox are scouting Detroit right-hander Jeff Weaver, though the Tigers' asking price may be too high for now.

Larry Monroe, the Sox's vice president of major league scouting, took in the Tigers-Phillies series in Detroit over the weekend, watching Weaver get bombed in an 11-1 loss Friday. The Sox are seeking a veteran starter, and though the Tigers are shopping Weaver, they want three players in return, including two with major-league experience.

Triple-A third baseman Joe Crede may be the key to a Weaver trade, though the Sox hope to hang on to him. A more likely option for the Sox is a package including Carlos Lee, Matt Ginter and a choice of minor-league pitchers.

Weaver is 4-8 with a 3.94 earned-run average, tied with Todd Ritchie for most losses among American League pitchers. But he's fourth in the AL in ERA on the road at 2.68, and has given up only two home runs. Weaver's four-inning outing Friday was his shortest stint over the last two seasons.

i would do this in a heartbeat if the package is Lee, Ginter, and a minor league pitcher(even if its Malone!). I still believe Lee is going to be a good hitter who hits .300/30+/100, but as of now, he isnt getting the job done on offense or defense. We have Liefer, Rowand, and Borchard to take his place. If we got Weaver, we wouldnt need Malone, as we would have Buehrle, Weaver, and a much improved Garland heading our rotation. Ginter has never impressed me enough to say I wouldnt trade him to get Weaver. Maybe he'll be a good reliever some day, but I'd rather have Weaver....

hey if you cant sign him, trade for him!!!!

I wouldn't mind that trade either. Put Carlos Lee at third, Matt Ginter could start soon, and throw in another prospect.

Didn't he come up as a third baseman?

And we've got a ton of guys at DH. Right now it's Randall Simon.

he used to play 3rd but he was changed to LF. Thats where he has played since 2000 at least. Ive never heard anything about him going back to 3rd, but his defense there cant be much worse than it is in the OF:biggrin:
