SAN FRANCISCO -- Jeff Kent didn't start the San Francisco Giants' game against Arizona Saturday because of sore ribs.
Kent, last season's NL MVP, was hit with a pitch by Diamondbacks starter Miguel Batista in the fourth inning of the Giants' 1-0 win over Arizona Friday night. He finished the game, but soreness in Kent's right side prompted manager Dusty Baker to rest his regular cleanup hitter and second baseman.
"I haven't even picked up a bat today," Kent said. "It's sore."
It was just the third start Kent has missed this season. He appeared in the late innings of both of his previous missed games, making him the only Giants player to appear in every game this season.
"Jeff is sore," Baker said. "He didn't feel good enough to get out there."
After a slow start this season, Kent is hitting .345 (38-for-110) with three homers and 17 RBI over the Giants' last 27 games. He has 12 homers and 67 RBI on the season.
Ramon Martinez, whose homer won Friday night's game for San Francisco, moved from third base to second, while Pedro Feliz played third. Armando Rios took Kent's cleanup spot.
