The Miami Dolphins traded former Bears quarterback and first-round draft pick Cade McNown to the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday for a conditional seventh-round draft choice in 2003.

The 49ers also signed former Bear Jim Flanigan to a two-year contract.

The Dolphins acquired McNown from the Bears last season for two draft choices, but the former UCLA star didn't throw a pass last season as Miami's third quarterback.

McNown was the 12th overall selection in the 1999 draft by the Bears. He started 15 of his 25 games during two dismal seasons with the Bears, completing 281 of 515 passes for 3,111 yards with 16 touchdowns and 19 interceptions.

In San Francisco, McNown will compete with Tim Rattay, Gio Carmazzi, Aaron Garcia and rookie Brandon Doman for a job behind Pro Bowler Jeff Garcia.

Flanigan spent last season with Green Bay, where he had 4 1/2 sacks. He spent his first seven NFL seasons in Chicago, recording 45 sacks in his career.

Flanigan will be expected to bolster the 49ers' pass rush, one of the NFL's least effective last season, alongside Andre Carter.
