This Day in Baseball History - July 22
"I don't care who you are, you hear those boos." -MICKEY MANTLE, Hall of Famer (1951-68)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(1876) In his major league debut, Louisville pitcher Johnny Ryan throws a record 10 wild pitches in a 30-7 loss to Chicago. It will be the rookie's first and last game.
(1909) Ty Cobb steals three bases in the one inning as the Tigers beat the Red Sox, 6-0.
(1913) In a game against the Giants, Slim Sallee becomes the only Cardinal pitcher in history to steal home.
(1941) Dick Wakefield becomes baseball's first 'bonus baby' when he signs with the Tigers for $52,000 and a new car. The University of Michigan standout will hit .143 in seven at-bat this season.
(1954) In an attempt to put more pop in the lineup, Casey Stengel inserts Mickey Mantle in the infield as the shortstop. The experiment works as the 'Commerce Comet' homers in the tenth inning giving the Yankees a 3-2 victory over the White Sox.
(1969) The All-star game is postponed by rain for the first time in major league history.
(1973) The Reds All-Star shortstop Dave Concepcion will miss the rest of the season due to a broken ankle.
(1983) Angel outfielder Brian Downing's AL record consecutive errorless streak ends at 244 games when he misplays Chet Lemon's line drive in a 13-11 loss to the Tigers.
(2000) The Ranger-Mariner game is delayed by rain due to Safeco Field's retractable roof failing to close. The contest is continued after 54-minutes giving the roof time to overcome its electrical problem and providing the groundskeepers an opportunity to dry the field.
