Luis Castillo extended his hitting streak to 30 games with a single tonight. It's the 39th time a player has hit in 30 consecutive games. Castillo is the first to do it since Vladimir Guerrero had a 31-game streak for Montreal in 1999.

Its time to take this guy serious. He is 14 games away from Pete Rose's record.

It's the 27th time a player has hit in 31 consecutive games. The feat has been accomplished just eight times in the major leagues since 1949, most recently by Vladimir Guerrero of Montreal, who had a 31-game streak in 1999.

The Marlins have 10 games left in their homestand against three teams with losing records and shaky pitching. Castillo, batting .388 during his streak and .330 overall, will face Cleveland's Chuck Finley (4-7, 3.92 ERA) on Tuesday.

It's the second longest streak among second basemen. St. Louis' Rogers Hornsby hit in 33 straight games in 1922.

A hit Tuesday night against Cleveland would give Castillo the longest streak since 1987, when Paul Molitor hit in 39 straight games for Milwaukee and San Diego's Benito Santiago had a 34-gamer.

Castillo needs to keep hitting for another month - until July 17 at Atlanta - to surpass Joe DiMaggio's 56-game streak, one of the most hallowed records in sports.

Luis needs to get at least past Rose. The Braves have just about one of the top rotations in baseball. He might run into some problems.

Luis Castillo singled in the bottom of the sixth.

33 consecutive

MIAMI (AP) - Luis Castillo tied Rogers Hornsby's 80-year-old record for
the longest hitting streak by a second baseman, beating out a dribbler
to the pitcher in the sixth inning Wednesday to make it 33 games in a
row.

The Marlins' fleet leadoff hitter was 0-for-2 before he topped a 1-0 pitch that Cleveland Indians right-hander Danys Baez fielded on the second hop between the mound and plate. Baez's hurried throw sailed over the head of first baseman Jim Thome, and Castillo continued to second.

Official scorer Ron Jernick immediately credited Castillo with a hit and charged Baez with an error for allowing the runner to advance to second. TV replays confirmed the call, showing that Castillo reached first as the throw sailed past.
