KIRKLAND, Wash. -- Seattle Mariners shortstop Carlos Guillen has been charged with drunken driving.
No date was set for arraignment on the misdemeanor charge that was filed Tuesday in Kirkland Municipal Court.
Guillen, 26, was stopped by police in suburban Clyde Hill last Thursday after they clocked him at 89 mph in a 60-mph zone. An officer said he smelled alcohol, saw his eyes were "bloodshot and watery" and administered a portable breath test that indicated his blood alcohol level was .093 -- higher than the state's legal threshold of .08.
Police said Guillen then refused to take a Breathalyzer test when he was taken to the police station. The refusal resulted in automatic suspension of his driver's license.
Guillen, who went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs in the Mariners' 8-1 victory over Cincinnati on Tuesday night, said he was returning home from a night out after drinking about two glasses of wine and two beers with his girlfriend and other friends.
In 2001, Guillen became the Mariners' starting shortstop after Alex Rodriguez left to sign as a free agent with the Texas Rangers. Guillen was diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis Sept. 28 and missed the final nine games of the regular season. He came back to play in four postseason games when the Mariners reached the AL championship series.
Guillen is hitting .298 with seven homers and 35 RBIs this season.
