View Full Version : AL only sleepers

As most of you know by now I'm in an AL-only league. That was my first mistake. I couldn't take advantage of players like Helton and Schilling, but what ya gonna do?
I recently picked up Kevin Mench and dropped Adam Piatt who is in a slump. I was wondering if anyone knew who else I should keep an eye on? I also have Graffanino who does real well when he actually plays but I need something more than that.
That goes for batters as well as pitchers. I'm still first in my league but my pitchers seem to be cooling down. I have Byrd, Weaver, Mussina, Driskill and Lopez. I know I'll need some help in this department sooner or later.

How deep is your league?
How many teams?
How many players on your roster?
Roto? H2H?
What does your roster currently look like?
I need to know a these things to give any imput.
A good find right now is TB catcher Toby Hall.
Toby is back in the BIGS and is hitting well. He batted .350 in 92 at bats during his demotion. In his 1st game back he went 3 for 5 with 2 doubles and 2 runs scored.
Orlando Hernandez may be on the wire. He has just been activated.
Joe Mays will be back in a couple weeks. (possibly July 12)
Sidney Ponson is hot lately.

Thanks for your advice. As for my league I would say it's a deeper league. Deeper than most anyway. It has two divisions 8 teams total. The roster is 22 players. During a given week you can have seven pitchers (starter or closers), a player on each base....ie. 1st, 2b, ss, etc...the outfield positions are a utility player. The league is head to head.
My roster is as follows...
C - Molina
1B - Mike Sweeney
2B - Luis Rivas
SS - Ramon Santiago
3B - Herbert Perry
OF - Magglio Ordonez
OF - Darin Erstad
OF - Kevin Mench
Starting Pitchers -
Paul Byrd
Jeff Weaver
Rodrigo Lopez
Travis Driskill
Mike Mussina
Closers -
Sasaki
Guardado
My extra players that I swap in and out from week to week are Wendell Magee, Chris Gomez, Ricky Gutierrez, Dmitri Young, Lawton, Rhodes and Escobar.
As for the names you gave me only Mays is still a free agent and unforunately no one in my league trades. And god forbid I propose one because I'm in first and you know how competitive fantasy baseball is. Haha. So I suppose Mays might be my only options. I have ran across another free agents on the Twins staff, Johan Santana. He looks like he could be a winner. Any thoughts?

Someone grabbed Toby allready?
Joe Mays was one of 2001’s biggest surprises, Mays was a legit Cy Young candidate, though it should be noted that he was 8-1 with a 1.84 ERA against Detroit and Kansas City and 9-12 with a 3.89 ERA against everyone else.
Joe Kennedy is worth a roster spot. Solid stuff , good control, & healthy.
Check into OF Carl Everett, he has All-Star potential once he clears his head.
The knuckleballer steve Sparks will eat up innings for you.
Prospect Michael Cuddyer (Twins) is due for a call-up. And he is HOT!
Dump Rhodes.
I will post again when I have more time to research.

Toby Hall - C Devil Rays - Hall is the first of the wrongly-banished youngsters to return to the majors. Hank Blalock, Morgan Ensberg and Carlos Pena are all candidates to join him sometime soon. Hall will return to being Tampa Bay’s starting catcher, but he won’t play as much as he did early in the year, at least not until he gets his batting average up. Hall should be a top-five catcher in AL-only leagues over the rest of the season. He’s also an option in mixed leagues as soon as he starts hitting.

Thanks guys. Unfortunately, everyone both of you mentioned is taken except for the players who were demoted like Pena. I did drop Rhodes and picked up Johan Santana who won tonight vs. Milwaukee. He pitches against Oakland next week so it will be a matter of matchups as to whether I start him or not. I'll look forward to any other thoughts you might have.

I looked up Johan, and I like his strikeouts to walk ratio.
Good pickup!

Thanks. I think Santana could be a decent pitcher while the Twins need him at least. Once everyone is off the DL he might be in the pen.

What do you guys think of Mike Lamb? I was considering picking him up and alternating him and Perry at either 3rd or the utility position. I figured at least one of them would play each night if not both at 1b and 3rd. Although if I pick up Lamb I would have to get rid of either Santiago on Detroit, or the DL twins Dmitri Young and Gutierrez.

LATEST NEWS - June 19 - Previous News
Mike Lamb made his first career start in the outfield today and went 3-for-5. Lamb is doing a nice job this year, but he's not playing as well as Herbert Perry, so once the Rangers' outfielders start returning, Lamb's playing time will be reduced dramatically.
Jeff Zimmerman pitched to hitters Saturday for the first time since early March.
Zimmerman threw two sets of 25 pitches in a controlled-game situation. Zimmerman tried his slider, but he did not throw it at full speed. ''I accomplished what I wanted to,'' Zimmerman said. ''It's encouraging. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.'' Zimmerman might not be back immediately after the All-Star break, but he does appear nearly ready for a rehab assignment.

Thanks. The only reason I thought of Lamb is because he's playing pretty well and I thought I'd get a few hits out of him before the outfielders get back. Doesn't he also play first? Who does normally?

I read where Everett thinks he's ready to return and doesn't want to do a rehab assignment but the manager thinks differently. To me that sounds like Lamb might have a place in the OF along with Mench or Lamb might play third when Perry needs a break. I knew all along that Lamb was just a temporary solution. I have Magee at the utility position now and he's done pretty much nothing this week. Just though Lamb might be useful, at least for next week.

It looks like recently Delaford has been playing more. I guess he has about as much worth as Lamb although Lamb has a little pop to his bat. Again, I was just thinking of a temporary solution. Keeping someone for the week in hopes of them playing at least 4-5 games.

Sadly, Wells is taken too. The names I've mentioned..Lamb, Relaford, Piatt are the best choices I have. As far as I can tell everyone else in the FA market don't play everyday.

geez are there like 20 people in this league?
dont go for piatt, hes been slumping as of late
some more from the top of my head:
joe crede 3b CWS <-- hes probably not active yet
Nich Johnson 1b <--- his numbers are really crappy but i think you are good for at least 20-25 HRs but you might have to live with a .250 avg
i think Kielty from MINN, hes just likle Mohr
Brian Daubach 1b Boston - hes going to get a lot more playing time but hes very inconsistent

Haha. You'd think there were 20 people in my league but there are only 8. Since I'm running out of time (I have to have my lineup for the week by noon ET Monday) I'll give you a run down of all my free agents options in regards to hits and HR's.
Hits - Clayton, Truby, Lamb, Ibanex, Graffanino, Relaford.
HR - Stevens, Sandberg, Clayton, Inge, Buchanan, Hinch.
Lamb does have 4 homers so he's not too far from the top list of FA. But none of the people I have access to play everyday as far as I can tell.

Thanks to everyone who added any input to my free agent quest. Just so you all know I didn't take Lamb. I took Ibanez who has been red hot and seems to be playing nearly everyday.
