Steve Trachsel's strained right trapezius will need a little more time than originally anticipated before it heals completely so the right-hander was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday. Team physician Dr. Andrew Rokito examined Trachsel at the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases, administering an EMG [electromiogram] and an MRI. The tests showed no structural damage and Trachsel should be able to return from the DL when he's eligible on July 16. Trachsel received a mixed shot of cortisone and muscle relaxants on Sunday. Righty Tyler Walker was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk and was available for Tuesday's game at the Vet. Walker, however, won't necessarily make the start on Friday in Florida, Trachsel's next scheduled turn in the rotation. Manager Bobby Valentine said that he has yet to make any decision regarding Friday and that Walker's recall over Mike Bacsik had more to do with the fact that Walker has pitched well in relief when called upon during his career while Bacsik has not. He said Walker might see time in the 'pen this week. Valentine said that Bobby Jones was also a candidate to pitch but that didn't appear likely since he hasn't been stretched out. Satoru Komiyama, who was sent to Norfolk earlier this week for the purpose of stretching out to fill the role as spot starter, will make start for Norfolk on Wednesday and be eligible to pitch when Trachsel's turn comes around again. Ultimately, Trachsel will probably go on a rehab assignment before rejoining the parent club. "The last time there would be no chance of a problem and now it's a problem, so we'll just be sure," Valentine said. Trachsel rejoined the team Tuesday night at the Vet, sporting a big, square dressing on his right shoulder. "I'm sure I'll be more frustrated on Friday night [by missing a start] than I am now," Trachsel said. "But I'm relieved it's not as bad as it could have been. This gives me the opportunity to get it fixed right and be ready for the rest of the season."

As for Walker, he came on and pitched one inning, allowing two runs on a blast by Scott Rolen. "That's the first time in five years that I've called a pitch from the bench with Mike [Piazza] behind the plate," Valentine said of the Rolen homer. "And it wound up in the stands. He [Walker] had a good curve in the spring and I wanted to see it." Walker laughed about the pitch -- a hanger, he said -- but was glad to have his debut under his belt. "After a while I was all right," he added. "I was just a little excited." Walker was 6-3 with a 3.45 ERA in 17 starts for Norfolk, striking out 72 batters in 94 innings.

Utilityman John Valentin said he hasn't given much thought to the trading deadline later this month but admitted that he doesn't know if he will be with the Mets when July 31 passes. In all likelihood, Valentin's tenure with the Mets could be extended if the gap between them and the Braves could be closed. Otherwise, he has proven that he is still capable of playing and has a great deal of market value for a team in the pennant race. "I think I've done all right," said Valentin, who had a two-run pinch-hit double in the ninth inning on Tuesday. "It's been a challenge coming off the bench and pinch-hitting. I'm trying to get better at it but when I do start I am productive." Valentin said he hasn't thought about next season either but that he would like to be back in New York, depending on what his options are.
Joe McEwing will have a chance to snap his hitless streak [29 at-bats] on Wednesday. Valentine indicated that Super Joe would get start somewhere but wouldn't say where. "He hasn't played much during this time," Valentine said. "We'll get him in there and get him on the right track. I think it's a peculiar situation that has been exacerbated by a lack of playing time."
Norfolk first baseman Jorge Toca broke his right leg Tuesday night while covering home plate in a game against Richmond. He suffered a compound fracture of the tibia and fibula and underwent surgery after the incident.
Jeromy Burnitz picked up his fifth outfield assist of the season, throwing out Travis Lee at the plate in the third inning to keep the Mets lead at two runs. "That was a big play because had they scored they would have been one run closer and they would have kept hitting," Valentine said.
