Lilly sent to A's; Pena shipped to Tigers
NEW YORK -- Seeking to add even more pitching for the second half, the first-place New York Yankees acquired Jeff Weaver from Detroit early Saturday in a three-team trade that also included Oakland.
As part of the deal, the Athletics sent first baseman Carlos Pena to the Tigers and the Yankees dealt pitcher Ted Lilly to Oakland.

Lilly, a 26-year-old left-hander, is 3-6 with a 3.40 ERA in 11 starts and two relief appearances. On April 27 he pitched a one-hitter in a 1-0 loss at Seattle and on June 22 he pitched a three-hitter at San Diego for his first major league shutout.
"Lilly kept us on even keel the way he's pitched for us,'' Yankees manager Joe Torre said after Friday night's 6-3 win over Toronto.
Detroit also acquired minor league right-hander Franklyn German and a player to be named from Oakland.
In addition to Lilly, the A's got minor league outfielder John-Ford Griffin and right-hander Jason Arnold from the Yankees. Both are highly rated prospects.
"Ted Lilly is someone we've tried to get for the last several years,'' A's general manager Billy Beane said. "It's a success for us for a number of reasons. We get a major league pitcher and we get top picks from the Yankees.''
Lilly had left Yankee Stadium by the time the trade was announced at 12:30 a.m. EDT

Weaver, a right-hander who throws in the mid-90s, is 6-8 with a 3.18 ERA and three shutouts this season. Last year he went 13-16 with a 4.08 ERA.
Lilly, a left-hander, is 3-6 with a 3.40 ERA. A's general manager Billy Beane called him a "front-line staring pitcher" who will join the Oakland rotation, and Beane suggested that the A's might be making another move involving a starting pitcher soon.
Peña, acquired by Oakland in a six-player deal with Texas in the offseason, was named the American League's Rookie of the Month for April after hitting seven homers with 16 RBIs, but a 4-for-40 slide dropped his average to .218, and on May 21 the A's sent him to Triple-A Sacramento, where he hit .218 in 40 games.
Griffin, an outfielder, and Arnold, a right-handed pitcher, were New York's top two picks in the 2001 First-Year Player Draft last year, and both were with the Yankees' Double-A club in Norwich, CT. German, a right-hander, has been in the A's organization since 1997 and this year was 1-1 with a 3.12 ERA and 16 saves at Double-A.

Oakland's gonna be gooooooood. Teddy's gonna be a good pitcher if he pans out :ohno:, and he should especially with a solid spot in the rotation, something he didn't have in New York. man, Oakland's got a scary rotation now :uhoh:

Looks to me like a good deal for the A's. The allways secretive Billy Beane surprized everyone again. I never seen it coming.
Detroit now has their 1st basemen of the future, but they have a big hole in their pitching staff.
New York got a solid starter, but they gave up a young solid starter plus some prospects. Jeff Weaver should make an impact immediately, but he is a prime canidate for arm burnout, having pitched more innings than any other pitcher in MLB the past 2 1/2 years.
Billy say's there is one more move coming involving the rotation. Could this mean Corie Lidle? Arron Harang? NO,NO,NO, Not the "Big Three"? Hudson, Mulder, and Zito have to stay put. He wouldn't do that to us? Would he?

Cory Lidle - S Jul 6 rotoworld
With Ted Lilly seemingly likely to take his rotation spot, Cory Lidle's days in Oakland figure to be numbered.
Lidle has pitched well lately, so he should have some trade value. He would have less fantasy value as a part of most teams' rotations than he would in Oakland's, but odds are that he will go to a contender, so he still figures to be worth owning.

"I think any time you're going acquire a package of talent, and certainly we like these three players, you're going to have to give something up," Billy Beane.

the A's got a lot out of this deal. besides Lilly, they aquired Jason Arnold, who could very much make thier rotation in a couple of years, and Griffin, who could be a regular in a couple of years too.

This trade will be a success if our Lilly beats their Weaver in the playoffs.
:boxing:
That is assuming the Yanks even make the playoffs.

A's definitely wanted Lilly, prospects, not Weaver

THE A'S didn't really have a chance to keep Jeff Weaver in the three- way trade that brought them Ted Lilly.
"Billy Beane and our baseball people had had their eye on Lilly for a long time," A's owner Steve Schott said, "and they liked the two prospects (outfielder John-Ford Griffin and pitcher Jason Arnold) we got in the deal. The only way we could get them was to get Detroit involved because the Yankees wanted Weaver. So, it may have seemed we had Weaver but it was only to move him along to the Yankees, as we'd already agreed. We made the deal our baseball people wanted to make."

I think Lilly is a better pitcher than Weaver. I thought it hilarious Weaver got rocked in his first Yank start, even though he got the win.:barf:
The wildcard is gonna be a tight race between Anaheim, us, and you, far too soon to predict.
Good Luck! :angel2:

The Yanks aren't a lock. There's alot of season left. They hit a slump and that could melt *snapping fingers* like that.

I don't think the Yanks are a lock RIGHT NOW, but God knows what FAT GEORGE will still end up doing.
