As you can tell by my signature, I happen to like the music of the 50's, 60's, & 70's that is played on WCBS-FM 101.1. well today, they had a live broadcast from the Museum of Television & Radio. I was there in attendance.

July 7th, 1972 - The Way It Was!

Jun 20, 2002 2:16 pm US/Eastern

So here it is, July 7th 1972. Three years after man walked on the moon and four years before the big 1976 Bicentennial celebration. What?! You mean you don't remember what was going on 30 years ago? I understand, I heard a lot of stories! Well, lucky for you I was able to score a copy of the "Night Owl Edition" of The New York Daily News, and I didn't even have to spring for the 10 cents!

Maybe this is how you remember July 7th, of '72...

The 7th was a Friday and the weather was sunny, breezy and warm with a high around 77. The big headline story of The Daily News was a fist fight between two City Officials at City Hall during a meeting yesterday. The two combatants were Environmental Protection Administrator Jerome Kretchmer and City Councilman Michael DeMarco of The Bronx, and they came to blows over where to place a Sanitation Department marine transfer station in The Bronx. Kretchmer suffered a bloody ear as City Hall police broke up the melee.

It was also the Friday before the start of The Democratic National Convention that was taking place in Miami on Monday. Sen. George McGovern and Hubert H. Humphrey were seeking the Democratic nomination to oppose President Nixon in the upcoming election.

Maybe you hopped into your '72 Ford Maverick or your Datsun PL 510 (oh my!) and headed up to Alexander's on Fordham Road in The Bronx for "some threads!" For the guys you could have walked out with some Gingham plaid or neat check sport shirts for just $2.99 each. For a buck more you could have gotten yourself a pair of jeans as well! The ladies might have wanted to head to Mays on 14th St in Manhattan for some Culotte Shifts for $2.00 or a two piece short set for the same price! C'mon, you KNOW you all wore these, don't deny it!!

Korvettes, which in 1972 boasted "discount prices and big savings in The World's Largest Record Department" had many LP's, casettes, and cartridge tapes to choose from. Stereo LP's from Simon and Garfunkel, Al Green, and Malo were selling for as high as $3.99 while casettes of The Jeff Beck Group, Aretha Franklin, and Derek And The Dominos were setting you back as much as $5.89.

Big Deal! Korvettes might have had the best LP's at the lowest prices, but the Mays store on Jamaica Ave at 169th in Queens had Bill Withers! That's right, tomorrow July 8th you could have your copy of "Still Bill" featuring "Lean On Me" signed by Bill "Ain't No Sunshine" Withers. (as the print ad "billed him" pun intended!)

Maybe you were too young to go driving on Fordham Road in 1972. Perhaps you were sitting home in your diapers watching Big Bird and Grover on "Sesame Street" or Morgan Freeman's "Easy Reader" on "The Electric Company." Or maybe you were able to sneak in watching "The Dating Game" and "The Newlywed Game" on Channel 7 before you started your homework. Which of course had to be done by 4:30 so you can watch "The Mike Douglas Show" on Channel 2. Mike's guest on this day was William Holden. (wasn't he the guy that made Lucy set her nose on fire?!)

Since it was summer, it was time for summer reruns. That included a rerun of "Sanford and Son" on Channel 4 while Channel 7 reran episodes "The Odd Couple" and "The Partridge Family." Of course, with the occastion of it being a Friday night, you were able to stay up all the way until 11:30 to see Johnny Carson on "The Tonight Show." Johnny's guests were Robert Mitchum, Robert Klein, and Mac Davis.

What could be better than doing the town on a Friday night? Want to go to a concert? See a show? Catch a movie? You could have headed to Yankee Stadium at 7:00 for some incredible hits, and I don't mean from Horace Clarke! The Newport Jazz Festival was occupying The House That Ruth Built tonight featuring performances by Ray Charles and his Orchestra, B.B. King, Nina Simone and others.

Or maybe The Great White Way was more to your liking. How about "Grease" at The Broadhurst Theatre or Art Carney starring in Neil Simon's "The Prisoner of Second Avenue" at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre.

Perhaps you could see for yourself what "offer couldn't be refused as "The Godfather" continued it's world premiere 3 theatre showing in Manhattan. One of those three theatres happened to have been the Lowe's State II on Broadway and 45th St. (The Current Home of New York's Oldies Station!) Sequels were also big at the movies. "Shaft's Big Score" with Richard Roundtree and "Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes" with Roddy McDowell and Ricardo Montalban were in theatres across the city. (Could you imagine if it had been called "The Wrath Of Armando?!" Good Grief!)

The sports scene in New York was without a doubt still reeling from The Knicks losing in the NBA Finals to The Lakers and The Rangers losing to The Bruins in The Stanley Cup Finals last month. To make matters worse, it's been reported that The Rangers lost defenseman Jim Dorey to the New England Whalers of the new rival World Hockey Association. So, With a "wait till next year" attitude, our attention switched to baseball.

If you take today's Major League Baseball standings and switch the local teams around, you'll get a feeling of what was going on in 1972. The Yankees were stuck in 4th place at 32-35, 6 games behind The Baltimore Orioles, while The Mets were sitting pretty in 2nd place at 43-28 just a game and a half behind The Pittsburgh Pirates. The Yanks were in Minnesota tonight to face The Twins with Mike Kekich opposing Jim Kaat. Minnesota had just fired manager Bill Rigney, which made headlines here in New York. The Bombers leading hitters were Ron Bloomberg and Felipe Alou at .289 with Bobby Murcer and Thurman Munson hanging steady at .279 and .262 respectivly.

The Mets were at Shea tonight to take on The Los Angeles Dodgers. Jon Matlack was on the hill for The Amazin's while The Dodgers countered with Don Sutton. The Mets leading hitters were Rusty Staub at .290 and Cleon Jones at .266. Tommy Agee and Jim Fregosi were both hitting at .250.

While checking the leading hitters in the National League it was interesting to note that Joe Torre of The St. Louis Cardinals was batting .306 and Bobby Valentine of The Los Angeles Dodgers was hitting .276. Add 30 years and two new uniforms and they're still going at it!

Scanning deeper into the sports section of The News, columnist Phil Pepe gave you his take on the upcoming Muhammad Ali vs Floyd Patterson fight at Madison Square Garden next month. Right next to Phil's column was of course, a cartoon by Bill Gallo!

What did not get any attention on July 7th 1972 was the rebirth of the 101.1 frequency on the FM side. The only print mentions of CBS-FM 101.1 in the Daily News you really had to hunt for. Tomorrow night at 8:00 you could hear Mandrill with special guest Curtis Mayfield live from Central Park on WCBS-FM 101.1 as part of The Schaefer Music Festival. The broadcast could be heard in Quadraphonic on SQ equipment if you were a big shot and had that sort of thing! The other mention was in the FM radio grid as "WCBS 101.1" was sandwiched between WVNJ 100.3 and WPIX 101.9.

From the moment "Donna The Prima Donna" shot out of CBS-FM 30 years ago, those other stations mentioned went on to other things, and other things, and other things and well you get the picture! In that time there has been one constant in New York Radio. CBS-FM 101.1 New York's Oldies Station did, is, and will continue to play the greatest hits of everyone's lifetime! "..and that's the way it was." (Thanks Uncle Walter!)

It was thirty years ago today....
Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play...
They've been going in and out of style...
But they're guarenteed to raise a smile...
