Because of continued rain in Sarasota, Fla., Carl Everett yesterday played for the Gulf Coast rookie team, which is based in Fort Myers. He played seven innings, including two in the outfield, and went 1 for 2 with a home run and an intentional walk, his fourth in three games. He had only served as the designated hitter in his first two outings with Single A Sarasota and will not get closer to returning to the majors until he gradually works up to playing the outfield regularly.

''He needs to go out there and feel good about himself in the outfield and be able to repeat it,'' manager Jimy Williams said. ''You can't expect him to just jump in there and start playing nine innings right away. You're going to hurt him, maybe somewhere else. You've got to get your game legs back.''
