The White Sox today acquired infielder D’Angelo Jimenez in a trade with the San Diego Padres for minor-league outfielder Alex Fernandez and catcher Humberto Quintero.

Jimenez, a switch-hitting infielder whom the Sox plan to play shortstop, was optioned to Class AAA Charlotte.

After a stellar major-league debut with the Yankees in 1999 when he had four hits and two RBIs, Jimenez's development was slowed by a fractured vertebrae suffered in a car accident in his native Dominican Republic in January of 2000. He played in just 37 games the following season. But ranked third among National League rookies in 2001 with a .276 batting average.

He was traded by the Yankees to the Padres on June 23, 2001.

“D’Angelo is a guy we have had our eyes on for a number of years,” White Sox general manager Kenny Williams said. “We thought he was one of the quality shortstop prospects in the game three years ago before his accident. Now that he is completely healed, we are looking forward to returning D’Angelo to his natural position at shortstop. Adding D’Angelo gives us a greater degree of infield depth.”

In 87 games for the Padres this season, Jimenez, 24, hit .240 (77-321) with three home runs and 33 RBIs. In parts of three major-league seasons with the New York Yankees (1999) and San Diego (2001-02), Jimenez is hitting .262 (170-649) with six home runs, 70 RBIs, a .337 on-base percentage and a .351 slugging percentage.

Fernandez, 21, was hitting .292 (100-343) with seven home runs, 52 RBIs and 20 stolen bases at Class AA Birmingham where he ranked among the Southern League leaders in RBI and hits. The outfielder was selected by the Sox from Seattle in the minor-league phase of the Rule 5 draft this December.

Quintero, a 22-year-old catcher, has played at three stops in the White Sox's system this summer, combining to hit .216 (46-213) with no home runs and 20 RBI in 71 games. He currently is at Class A Winston-Salem.
