Bichette agrees to minor-league deal with L.A.

LOS ANGELES -- Four-time All Dante Bichette signed a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, with an invitation to spring training as a non-roster player, according to Dodgers Executive Vice President and General Manager Dan Evans.

Bichette, a 14-year Major League veteran, spent the 2001 season with the Boston Red Sox, batting .286 with 12 home runs, 30 doubles and 49 RBIs in 107 games. He played 53 games in the outfield and 54 games as the designated hitter.

During his career, the 38-year old right-handed hitter has compiled a .299 batting average, 274 home runs, 401 doubles and 1,141 RBI in 1,704 games with five teams, California (1988-90), Milwaukee (1991-92), Colorado (1993-99), Cincinnati (2000) and Boston (2000-01). He was named to the National League All-Star team four times (1994-96, 1998), and lead the NL in homers (40), RBI (128) and hits (197, tied) in 1995 and in hits (219) in 1998.

The Dodgers will begin reporting to Spring Training in two weeks. Pitchers and catchers report on Thursday, Feb. 14 with the first workout slated for the following day. Remaining position players report on Tuesday, Feb. 19 with the first full-squad workout scheduled for the next day.

03.22 Dante Bichette (OF) LA Dante Bichette was considering leaving the Dodgers, but said yesterday that he plans to honor his contract. If he ends up being released, there is a good chance he would sign with the Angels, according to the LA Times.

Not having a good spring at all production wise but he has stung the ball a few times. He does not appear to want to take the pinch hitting role the Dodgers need him for. Could be a toughie as a productive Bichette would have very much been appreciated whatever his role was.
