A's player news

The Athletics are 35-7 in their last 42 regular season games.

Mark Mulder will miss his next scheduled start and be reevaluated on friday. No word on possilble DL list. I'll keep you posted.

Ramon Hernandez and his wife had a new baby boy. They named him Randy. He is back in the starting lineup (Ramon, not Randy).

After a hot start to the season David Justice is 0 for his last 11 at bats.

Eric Chavez has not singled yet this season, despite a .318 batting average.
All seven of the emerging slugger's hits have been for extra bases. Chavez joked before Wednesday's game that he might bunt so he can get a single.

Jermaine Dye did sliding drills in the outfield before the game and seemed to have little trouble doing so.
It was the first time Dye had slid during his rehabilitation from a broken left tibia in last season's playoffs. Dye will run the bases again Friday and slide again Saturday, then could be cleared for a rehab assignment at Triple-A Sacramento.

Tim Hudson hopes to continue his strong play, as he is making his third start for Oakland. The 26-year-old right-hander is 1-0 thus far with a 1.46 ERA. He has struck out 11 batters in his 12 1/3 innings while walking five. Hudson, who posted 20 wins in 2000 and finished second in the American League Cy Young voting, is coming off a 2001 campaign in which he notched 18 victories.

Just thought you should know, Ramon Hernandez wifes name is Bellatrix.....

Fullabull 04-14-2002 11:03 AM

The A's are looking at next Saturday as a potential return date for injured outfielder Jermaine Dye.
Dye is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday.

Fullabull 04-14-2002 09:38 PM

An examination of Mark Mulder's arm detected nothing serious. The left-hander could start Saturday.
Mulder has a strained forearm, ``It's very good news. We're not looking at a serious injury,'' trainer Larry Davis said. ``Dr. Yocum did not feel that this was a long-term problem or a potentially damaging problem. After we get those tests nice and clean, he could throw on the side Wednesday and see how he feels.''

David Justice didn't play today because of a bruised right triceps.
Justice was hit on the arm by a Jarrod Washburn pitch in the first inning Saturday, but he stayed in the game. He's day-to-day.

Jermaine Dye will complete his minor league rehab assignment
on Friday and is expected to join the A's on Saturday,
according to the Associated Press. He has yet to play in the
field, however.

A's player news 4-20-02

The A's had planned to activate Jermaine Dye for today's game, but now, it looks as if plans may have changed.
"We know he's ready to DH, but he's not ready to play the outfield," trainer Larry Davis said, adding that Dye needs more extensive agility work before he can take the field in a game. "So the question is, Is the need greater to have him as a DH, or as an outfielder?" Dye completed his four-game rehab stint 3-for-16 with two doubles. The A's face right-handers today and tomorrow, which may be one reason Dye won't be activated to be the DH immediately. Take your time to get the latest news before putting him in your lineup next week.

Mark Mulder, on the DL with a strained right forearm, played long toss in the outfield at 150 feet and "felt better today than he did yesterday," A's trainer Larry Davis said.

Randy Velarde, on the DL with a fractured bone in his left hand, took part in hitting drills before yesterday's game and is making progress, but there remains no timetable for his return.
Frank Menechino owners continue to be happy.

Eric Chavez is back in the lineup and playing third base for the A's today.
Chavez missed two games with a strained hip flexor.

Chad Bradford pitched two scoreless innings of relief tonight to earn a win. He has a 0.96 ERA.
Bradford is Oakland's best reliever right now. Expect manager Art Howe to start going to him in more crucial situations. Bradford definitely has some value in AL-only leagues.

Jermaine Dye is to start this Tuesday against the Yankees. Oakland will really need him to have a chance of beating the Mariners in the AL West.:2guns:

Fullabull 04-22-2002 11:29 PM

The Dye move will cut into Scott Hatteburg's DH role. Time to jump off the Hatteburg bandwagon. It was fun while it lasted.

Fullabull 04-22-2002 11:33 PM

Ramon Hernandez, who signed a four-year contract last month, went 0-for-3 tonight and is batting .128.
Greg Myers pitch-hit for him in the ninth inning of tonight's game and delivered a game-winning, three-run homer. Hernandez has already lost some playing time to Myers. Until he starts hitting, he's going to be a part-time player. Still, don't drop him in AL-only leagues.

Mulder

Although there was speculation the A's might bring back Mark Mulder from the disabled list for a start Saturday, the left-hander will remain out of action for a while longer. Mike Fyhrie will start for the A's on Saturday. "Mulder needs more time," A's manager Art Howe said. "We want him to get healthy." Mulder has a strained left forearm. ...

metmagic 04-27-2002 04:47 PM

do you know if he'll be one of the pitchers pitching during the skank series next week??

oh man, i'd love to watch him or any one of the triplets pitch.... i love them!!:squareluv

Fullabull 04-27-2002 05:21 PM

Mulders turn comes up May 2nd, the series finally. But because of an off day on Monday if the A's continue with a 5 man rotation his turn would land on May 3rd.

I'll keep you updated

Randy Velarde - 2B May 4

Athletics activated infielder Randy Velarde from the 15-day disabled list.
Velarde is getting the start at second base tonight, but he's going to have to settle for fewer at-bats than Frankie Menechino.
Mike Colangelo - OF May 4

Athletics optioned outfielder Mike Colangelo to Triple A-Sacramento.
With Colangelo gone, Terrence Long may never get a day off. Colangelo had been just 4-for-23 this season.
David Justice - OF May 4

David Justice, who had been out with a strained right groin, is back in the lineup for the Athletics tonight.
Justice is starting in right field, allowing Jermaine Dye to rest his leg as Oakland's DH.
David Justice - OF May 4

David Justice is close to returning to the lineup after missing more than a week with a strained right groin. Art Howe said he probably would've started Justice yesterday had the weather not been so chilly.

Miguel Tejada - SS May 3

Miguel Tejada went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 15 games.
There was concern that Tejada was facing a dropoff in production this season. Hitting .302 with five homers, there should be no concern.
Mark Mulder - S May 3

Mark Mulder threw on the side today without problems and will pitch a simulated game Sunday.
Mulder, who is now bothered by a stiff back in addition to his strained forearm, should return next week.
Jeremy Giambi - OF May 3

Jeremy Giambi doubled in the fifth inning, ending an 0-for-15 drought.
Giambi had been solid before this stretch, so we expect him to return to that form.
Randy Velarde - 2B May 3

Manager Art Howe said Randy Velarde (hand) will rejoin the team today but may not be activated from the DL until Saturday or Sunday.
Velarde is 7-for-14 in three games with Sacramento. He may assume the starting second base job upon return, but wait until seeing if/how he plays this weekend before putting him in your lineup. Source: Contra Costa Times
Miguel Tejada - SS May 3

Miguel Tejada is on a career-high 14-game hitting streak.
He's brought his average from .236 to .304 in the course of the streak. Source: Contra Costa Times
Carlos Peña - 1B May 3

Carlos Peña was voted the American League Rookie of the Month for April, hitting .264 with seven homers, four doubles, seven walks and 16 RBI.
Maybe the most impressive stat is that Pena played in all 26 games the A's played in April, a feat he may not have accomplished if Jermaine Dye and David Justice had been healthy the entire month. That said, if playing every day is what gave Pena the confidence to do this after it seemed he was the only Cactus League player who couldn't hit this spring, Dye's delayed return may have been a blessing in disguise for the A's.
