Guerin to be Traded?
Stars forward Bill Guerin has a clause in his contract that allows the Stars to trade him 45 days after the Stanley Cup Finals.
Bill Guerin Guerin said Tuesday that he must give Stars general manager Doug Armstrong a list of teams he would be willing to go to in a trade. Guerin and Armstrong would not say how many clubs would be on the list. And Guerin declined to name any clubs he was considering placing on the list. Any deal would probably include the Stars paying part of the nearly $25 million that remains on Guerin's five-year deal. In the first two years of the deal, Guerin had a full no-trade clause.
While no one is commenting on which teams might be interested in Guerin, one possibility is Florida. Mike Keenan, who coached Guerin in Boston in 2000-01, is the Panthers' general manager. Florida has plenty of young talent for trade bait.
"I'm not surprised that those rumors are out there," Guerin said. "I want to stay in Dallas, but that may not be up to me."
Armstrong declined to comment on anything regarding Guerin, only to say that the 45-day trade clause was a negotiated part of the contract. Guerin added that the Stars wanted the clause in the contract because "they had signed several players to no-trades and felt they got burned."

Boston wouldn't pay him that money in the first place, so I doubt they'd trade anyone valuable to get him back...

The Stars, looking to trim their bloated payroll, have until July 22-23 to deal Bill Guerin, who has three years left on his deal, worth approximately $25 million. According to the pact he signed as a free agent two summers ago, Guerin some 12 days ago provided the Stars with a list of 10 NHL cities to which he'd be willing to go in a swap. Now it's up to the Stars to try to work a swap with one of those clubs, or field an offer from one of the other 19 and hope the 33-year-old Guerin would OK the transfer. "He doesn't want to leave Dallas -- he's spending the summer there -- but he realizes it's a business, and those were the conditions of the deal he signed," said Bob Murray, Guerin's Boston-based agent. Murray would not divulge the 10 cities OK'd by his client, but a source with firsthand knowledge of the list confirmed that Boston is one. Murray also could not confirm rumors that the Stars, in their talks around the league, have made it clear they would be willing to pick up a chunk of Guerin's remaining $25 million. The Bruins would be interested, but the net cost would have to be roughly 50 percent of what Guerin is due -- and perhaps payable over 5-6 years . . .
