The Shorebirds scored the first three runs of the game and never looked back, completing the four game sweep of the Power with a 3-2 victory.

Jason Fransz broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the second inning on a solo shot, his seventh homerun of the season. The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth inning when Brian Bock knocked in Jake Duncan on an RBI single and CJ Smith knocked a run in later in the fourth on a Sac Fly RBI to make it 3-0 Shorebirds. Josh Murray brought the Power within a run on a two run blast in the top of the fifth inning. The homerun was his sixth of the season and made it a 3-2 contest. The Power had the tying run on second base in the top of the ninth inning when Tony Festa flew out to left field to end the game.

In the top of the fifth West Virginia cut the ‘Birds lead to one after the two run homerun from Josh Murray. The Shorebird bullpen took over with two outs in the sixth and shut down the Power. 'Birds 'playing good baseball'
Delmarva wins 5th straight, improves to 7-3

SALISBURY -- Everything has been coming together for the Shorebirds in the second half, and Sunday afternoon against the West Virginia Power at Perdue Stadium was no different.

A strong pitching performance from the starter, pitching changes made at the right time, defense and offense all added up to a 3-2 victory. It was Delmarva's fifth win in a row and seventh in its first 10 games of the second half.

"Right now, we're playing good baseball, but we're getting some breaks," Shorebirds manager Gary Kendall said. "Early in the year, it seemed like everything (our opponents) hit, it didn't matter who we were facing, it seemed like the ball got through. Right now they're hitting it at our guys."

The Shorebirds offense, which has been finding the holes lately, came from places the Shorebirds have come to expect it.

Jason Fransz got into a 2-and-0 pitch from West Virginia starter Forrest Martin leading off the second inning. His high fly ball to left field cut through the wind blowing across the field and touched off the back wall for a solo home run and a 2-0 lead.

"You're taught to look for the fastball (with a 2-and-0 count)," Fransz said. "I got a good pitch. I was kind of scared, because the winds been kind of blowing in, but I got enough to get it out."

After Jake Duncan led off the bottom of the fourth with a sharp-hit single, Fransz doubled to right. Duncan scored on Brian Bock's single to left field, and Fransz scored on a sacrifice fly to right for a 3-0 Shorebirds lead.

Duncan entered the game batting .611 in his last five games, Fransz was .353 in his previous five games, and Bock was five for his previous nine entering Sunday.

"I'm just trying to get in there, do the job and try to help the team," Bock said. "Getting hits helps the team and trying to drive in some runs. We've got a lot of offense now, so we're just trying to keep it going, get a couple of wins."

Following the game, Bock was informed that he was heading up to High-A Frederick.

Dennis Robinson made just one mistake while earning his third win of the season. That mistake came in the fifth inning. With the 3-0 lead, Robinson gave up a line drive single up the middle followed by a two-run home run by Josh Murray, his sixth of the season. Robinson ended up working 5 2/3 innings, scattering seven hits and walking just two.

"I was just confident, getting ahead in the count and the guys were making the plays behind me," Robinson said. "You get out to an early lead, you want to make sure you hold the lead down."

Leading 3-2 with a runner on first and Clay Blevins coming to the plate with two outs in the top of the sixth, Kendall pulled Robinson, who had thrown just 74 pitches. Southpaw Russ Petrick was called on to pitch against the left-handed hitting Blevins, who was 2-for-2 against Robinson on the day.

"Lefty-lefty (matchup) and Petrick's pretty good with the left-handers," Kendall said. "Robinson was effective and that fifth, sixth inning is always the threshold for Dennis, it seems like. And I didn't want him to walk out of that game with a no-decision or a loss."

Petrick promptly sat down Blevins on strikes. Casey Cahill worked two perfect innings before Trent Baysinger came on in the ninth. Baysinger got a strikeout and allowed a hit before being replaced by Justin Henington, who got two quick outs for his third save of the season.

West Virginia bats come alive on Independence Day

It finally happened.

It was late in the eighth inning. The West Virginia Power was losing --again. Not a single hitter was taking the cuts Manager Ramon Aviles desired.

Then, something clicked.

Alcides Escobar led off with a slow roller down the line. Hernan Iribarren followed with a bunt single. Before the 6,744 fans attendance knew it, eight consecutive batters reached.

Three two-run hits later, the Power had scored enough for an 8-2 victory over Lexington.

"Hitting is contagious," said Power utility man Josh Brady, who delivered a two-run double in the eighth.

Now, the Power hopefuls want winning to be contagious.

After a dismal 25-45 first half to the South Atlantic League season, West Virginia has started the final 70-game stretch 4-7, including a recent four-game losing skid.

That has come while the SAL first-half cellar-dwellers Delmarva, Lakewood and Hickory have climbed to the top of the second-half standings.

West Virginia, on the other hand, hasn't found much winning. Perhaps, until now.

"That win was huge for us," said Brady. "It felt good to get back to the potential we know we have."

Aviles maintains that the Power potential only goes as far as its bats will take them.

"Early in the game we had chances but we kept not swinging the bat and not being aggressive," said Aviles, a former Philadelphia Phillies middle infielder. "I hope that the late inning (helped) the guys realize when you swing the bat you got a shot."

Starting pitcher Josh Wahpepah (4-3) kept Lexington's hitters off balance much of his 5 2/3 scoreless innings, except for five hits. Wahpepah, a third-round draft pick in 2004, has held opponents scoreless in his last 10 2/3 innings of work.

West Virginia hosts Lexington again tonight at 7:05.

West Virginia scores 7 in eighth to power past visiting Lexington

The West Virginia Power scored seven runs in the eighth inning last night and routed the visiting Lexington Legends 8-2 in South Atlantic League baseball.

The Legends, down 1-0 after seven innings, scored a pair in the eighth to take a 2-1 lead before it all fell apart in the bottom of the inning.

The Power scored two runs -- one earned -- in the eighth off Paul Estrada (2-6) and four -- all earned -- off Chad Reineke before the Legends were able to register an out.

Estrada committed two errors in the inning on the first two batters.

Then William Lewis' single up the middle scored both baserunners.

After a walk and another single, the bases were loaded for Josh Brady, who belted a ground-rule double to left field, scoring a pair of runs.

Clay Blevins then doubled to left to score two more runs for West Virginia. Josh Murray singled in Blevins, the last run of the onslaught.

The Power sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning and scored runs on five hits.

The Legends, meanwhile, got nine hits in the game but stranded eight runners.

Bryan Triplett went 2-for-4 and scored a run for Lexington.

Hunter Pence went 0-for-4 in his return to full-time action after missing nearly three weeks with a strained quadriceps.

The eighth-inning collapse squandered a good outing by Legends starter Ronnie Martinez, who gave up one run and four hits in six innings. He struck out three and walked two.Tonight

Ump responds on short notice

After a long day at the office, Dave Burford was looking forward to a quiet evening at home.

"I'm not exactly sure what I would have done," said Burford of his Tuesday night plans. "I would have just been doing some things around the house, writing some bills and helping my 14-year-old son get ready for a trip to Kings Island on Thursday morning."

After a late afternoon phone call from West Virginia Power General Manager Andy Milovich, Burford traded his evening at home in Charleston for a much more intense after-work experience.

Burford, an employee at Columbia Gas, filled in for South Atlantic League umpire Roy Prauner in the Power's 9-5 win over Lexington before 2,355 fans at Appalachian Power Park.

Given the very short notice, Burford teamed admirably with SAL umpire Phil Mulroe in what was, at times, a heated contest between South Atlantic League Northern Division rivals.

"Actually I didn't find out I was umpiring until I was leaving my regular day job," said Buford, a 49-year-old Charleston High graduate. "It was almost 5:30, and I was getting in my car and starting it up, when I got a phone call from the general manager.

"I talked to Andy at about 5:25 and I was here at 6:15 p.m."

For Burford, an umpire since his days as a student at West Virginia University in the spring of 1977, Tuesday's game wasn't his first professional gig, but it was his first at the new ballpark.

"I've done some games before over at Watt Powell," said Burford, a member of the Kanawha Valley Umpires Association. "I did games when they were the Alley Cats, the Wheelers and even back when they were the Charlies in the late '70s.

"This park is beautiful," said Burford, whose home on Capitol Hill overlooks the new ballyard.

"The atmosphere is much different here than at Watt Powell. The people are right on top of you, where as at Watt Powell, they were a little farther from the field."

That intimacy with the crowd helps keep the men in blue on their toes, but also makes it easier for disgruntled fans to have their say.

"Even though the rain kept the crowd down a little bit, they were a vocal crowd tonight," said Buford. "You better believe it.

"But I enjoy it. The professional and college games are much different than the high school game.

"The games are quicker and the players at this level are a little faster. There are more bang, bang plays.

"We had a couple of really close plays, but that's what it's all about. You've got to make tough calls."
The Power (5-7), winners of two straight and four in a row at home, jumped on Lexington starter Evan Englebrook (6-2) early and held a 6-1 lead when they chased him from the game with two outs in the fourth.

The big hit was a one-out, three-run triple by designated hitter Will Lewis in the fourth.

"I was just looking for a pitch to hit with two strikes," said Lewis, a 32nd-round pick in the 2003 draft. "I was just lucky enough to get a pitch that I could drive into the gap."

Lewis added an RBI single in the eighth inning, while Hernan Irribarren added three hits and Grant Richardson chipped in with a pair of RBI.

West Virginia right handed starter Yovani Gallardo (2-3) picked up the win with six strong innings, while Derek DeCarlo and Robert Hinton combined to throw the final three innings, with Hinton getting his fifth save.

Hinton picked up his team leading, fifth save, in allowing just one hit and no runs in the game's final 21/3 innings.

The two teams will wrap up a brief three-game homestand tonight at 7:05 p.m.
