On Sept. 4, 1987, Tony Pena hit a two-run, tie-breaking homer in the eighth inning off Mark Davis to give the Cardinals a 4-2 win over the Padres at Busch Stadium. The Cards held on to a 3 1/2-game lead over the second-place Mets with the victory.

This date in Cardinals history: On Sept. 5, 2001, Woody Williams made the Padres regret trading him. In his first game back in San Diego since he was dealt for Ray Lankford, Williams pitched a complete-game two-hit shutout in a 2-0 Cardinals win. He struck out six and didn\'t issue a walk, facing the minimum 27 batters in nine innings.

On Sept. 6, 1958, the Cardinals beat Don Drysdale and the Brooklyn Dodgers with a three-run eighth-inning rally. The Cards entered the inning trailing, 2-0, and after Irv Noren\'s RBI double cut the lead in half, Joe Cunningham hit a game-winning two-run homer. Bob Mabe struck out 10 over eight innings for the win. Thanks to Project Retrosheet (www.retrosheet.org) for the information.

On Sept. 12, 1974, Al Hrabosky enjoyed arguably the best game of his career. The "Mad Hungarian" pitched four scoreless, hitless innings of relief for the save in a 12-5 win over the Mets at Shea Stadium. He also contributed mightily with the bat, going 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs. In his 13-year Major League career, Hrabosky had a total of eight hits and six RBIs.

On Sept. 13, 1996, the Cardinals played small ball for a 2-0 win over the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. After taking a scoreless tie into the ninth inning, St. Louis pushed across a run on Danny Sheaffer\'s squeeze bunt, then made it 2-0 on Luis Alicea\'s sacrifice fly. The win gave the Cards a 2 1/2-game lead over the second-place Astros.

On Sept. 21, 2001, Albert Pujols hit a game-winning -- though not game-ending -- grand slam as the Cardinals beat the Pirates, 9-5, at PNC Park. With a tie score going into the ninth, the Cards loaded the bases on two singles and a walk. Pujols delivered the win with a circuit clout off Omar Olivares, and Gene Stechschulte closed it out.

On Sept. 29, 2001, the Cardinals moved within two games of the first-place Astros with a 2-0 win over the Pirates at the old Busch Stadium. Matt Morris pitched eight brilliant innings (five hits, two walks and eight strikeouts) for his 21st win of the year, while a Fernando Vina homer and a Mark McGwire sacrifice fly provided the offense. Thanks to Project Retrosheet for the information.

Cool This date in Cardinals history
