Narveson walked six, but struck out seven over seven shutout innings as Memphis beat New Orleans, 5-0, on Sunday. ... Double-A Springfield finished up its season with a 7-3 loss to Arkansas, ending the second half at 27-43. Nick Stavinoha and Gabe Johnson each had two hits in the finale. ... Class A Palm Beach leads Daytona and St. Lucie each by a game after losing, 6-5, to Jupiter. Nick Webber pitched five outstanding innings (six hits, one run, six Ks, no walks), but his bullpen couldn\'t hold the lead. Ryan Barthelemy singled, doubled and hit his 14th home run. ... Bryan Anderson went 2-for-3, but it was mostly a quiet offensive day for Class A Quad Cities in a 6-1 loss to Burlington. ... Short-season State College\'s playoff hopes took a severe blow in a doubleheader loss to Mahoning Valley. The Spikes lost by scores of 2-0 and 3-2. Tyler Herron pitched six solid innings in defeat (seven hits, two runs, one walk, three strikeouts).
\r\n
\r\nNarveson is the player of the day as he wraps up a very nice bounce-back season. In 14 Memphis starts, he went 7-5 with a 3.08 ERA, 51 strikeouts and 27 walks in 73 innings.

The playoffs are under way in the Minors, and two Cardinals affiliates are taking part. Class A Palm Beach dropped Game 1 of a best-of-three semifinal series to St. Lucie, 6-4, on Tuesday night. Jaime Garcia lasted just 3 1/3 innings in the loss. Luis Cotto had three hits for the "Beach Birds." Game 2 is set for Wednesday at Tradition Field in Port St. Lucie.
\r\n
\r\nClass A Quad Cities, meanwhile, opens postseason play on Wednesday night. The Swing will face Kane County in a home game at 6:30 p.m. CT.
\r\n
\r\nThe only Cards affiliate still playing regular-season games is short-season State College. The Spikes beat Batavia, 4-2, behind six innings of three-hit ball from Eddie Degerman. State College has been eliminated from playoff contention.

Welcome to the big leagues, kid: Left-hander Chris Narveson made his Major League debut on Friday, throwing two innings and giving up a pair of runs. But with the Cardinals already down big, it didn\'t make too much of a difference.
\r\n
\r\n"Except that he hung a couple breaking balls, I thought he looked not bad for his first time," La Russa said. "That\'s the perfect way to make his debut. He\'s going to get two innings. If you only face one hitter and see if you get him out, it\'s not really an experience. It was good for him, it was good for us."

Down on the farm: The Cardinals\' Class A affiliate, the Swing of the Quad Cities (1-2) fell, 10-7, on Friday night to the Kane County Cougars in the third game of the first round of the Midwest League playoffs. Despite a late rally, the Swing could not overcome an eight-run deficit.

The Cardinals\' top draft pick of 2006, Adam Ottavino, made the playoff start for Class A Quad Cities on Saturday, but a 10-7 loss to Kane County meant the Swing\'s season was finished. Quad Cities was the last of the Cardinals\' minor-league affiliates to end its season. Ottavino allowed four runs (two earned) and six hits in three innings.

The Cardinals announced on Friday that they will not bring back manager Danny Sheaffer or hitting coach Tommy Gregg at Triple-A Memphis. According to a release from the big league club, the Cardinals and Sheaffer "mutually agreed not to renew his contract."
\r\n
\r\nSheaffer posted a 244-266 record in four years managing the team after taking over for Tom Spencer early in the 2003 campaign. Memphis went a disappointing 58-86 in 2006. The decision came as little surprise to any of the parties involved.
\r\n
\r\n"I think it was a mutual decision that it was time to move on, to have new leadership and a new direction on that club," said general manager Walt Jocketty. "And I think Danny had kind of worn out. Managing Triple-A is a tough job."
\r\n
\r\nSheaffer may remain with the organization, but that\'s far from a guarantee.

As they had hoped, the Cardinals will return to the New York-Penn League in 2007. Days after losing their short-season Class A affiliate at State College, Pa., they replaced that club with another affiliate in the same league. St. Louis announced a two-year agreement with the Batavia Muckdogs of the NYPL.
\r\n
\r\n"The club is pleased to be able to remain in the New York-Penn League," assistant general manager John Mozeliak said in a statement issued by the team. "Batavia has always been a place our clubs have enjoyed playing at as visitors, so it will be nice to call Dwyer Stadium home. ... We hope this two-year agreement is just the first of many years to come between the Cardinals and the Batavia organization."
\r\n
\r\nThe NYPL is often the first professional stop for new draftees out of college. Less polished, newly drafted players tend to start in rookie ball -- for the Cardinals, that\'s Johnson City of the Appalachian League.

Left-hander Chris Narveson caught the organization\'s eye with a strong \'06 at Triple-A Memphis. He\'ll likely get a chance to make the team this spring. Most of the more exciting talent in the organization, though, is a year or more away.

Marti shows off stroke in Arizona
\r\nCardinals newcomer finishes season on high note
\r\nBy Benjamin Hill / Special to MLB.com
\r\n
\r\nAmaury Marti leads the Arizona Fall League\'s Peoria Saguaros in home runs, but after smashing three long balls over his first 20 AFL at-bats, the 32-year-old Cuban defector has not gone yard over his last 61.
\r\nThat doesn\'t mean Marti hasn\'t been hitting well. In fact, he has collected two hits in each of his last four games and has hit safely in seven straight overall. Marti\'s average now stands at a team-leading .346, and his stellar performance in the AFL has gone a long way toward proving that the little-known slugger may have what it takes to perform in the big leagues.
\r\n
\r\nHere\'s how the Cardinals\' other five AFL competitors did this week, as well as updates on St. Louis farmhands currently honing their skills in the Dominican Winter, Mexican Pacific and Venezuelan Winter Leagues.

Nick Webber pitched five outstanding innings (six hits, one run, six Ks, no walks), but his bullpen couldn't hold the lead. Ryan Barthelemy singled, doubled and hit his 14th home run. ... Bryan Anderson went 2-for-3, but it was mostly a quiet offensive day for Class A Quad Cities in a 6-1 loss to Burlington. ... Short-season State College's playoff hopes took a severe blow in a doubleheader loss to Mahoning Valley. The Spikes lost by scores of 2-0 and 3-2. Tyler Herron pitched six solid innings in defeat (seven hits, two runs, one walk, three strikeouts).

Narveson is the player of the day as he wraps up a very nice bounce-back season. In 14 Memphis starts, he went 7-5 with a 3.08 ERA, 51 strikeouts and 27 walks in 73 innings.
